Construct your own small planetarium dome.

Description

The Star Dome's unique design allows for a nearly distortion-free depiction of the starry sky, much like you'd find inside a planetarium dome. The cut-out sheet elegantly solves the ancient cartographer problem of mapping a three-dimensional sphere onto a flat surface. The Star Dome depicts all the stars and constellations visible in the southern sky of the northern hemisphere down to latitudes of 40°N. Includes date and time markers to simplify locating stars and constellations. Sturdy, easy to build, and stackable, this full-color star chart is ideal for astronomical group work at school or in Scout groups. Construction time: about 40 minutes. Diameter: 21 cm (8.25"). Some glue required - not included.

The students can use the Star Dome to construct a model of a planetarium. For younger students it provides a concrete teaching tool for the Northern hemisphere stars. For Middle and High School students, it's a great starting point and foundation for more complex mathematical and computational representations in the Solar System.
