Description

A great introduction to using a dichotomous key for species identification. The kit includes eight distinct sea turtle models. Each beautifully detailed turtle is 2" in length, and has the correct number of scutes on the carapace and plastron. A wonderful hands-on classroom activity, the kit comes complete with all the paperwork needed for background information, vocabulary, and identification.

I have used this activity in my high school biology class for about 5 years and it is awesome. Student engagement is high and the lasting impact is evident. I supplement this activity with a little mini lesson on Sea turtles, but is a great 2 day experience for the students with very little prep work involved.

The sea turtles were absolutely realistic, but the identification names on the underside of each turtle were really difficult to read.

Suggested Science Idea(s)

Eight distinct, anatomically accurate sea turtle models support engaging hands-on classroom activity. Students use a dichotomous key and the model turtles for species identification. The kit is embedded with background information, vocabulary, and identification guidelines for instruction.

Break students into eight groups. Set up eight lab stations. Have teams rotate to each station to utilize the dichotomous key to identify the turtle.

Extension: gather eight different small plastic toys (such as dinosaurs, toy soldiers, farm animals, etc). Have each team develop an original dichotomous key to identify their set of plastic toys.

Have students research the various turtles to see whether the connections between the turtles' specific traits are supported or not supported in its native environment.
