Description

A scientific experiment you can eat!
Crystals grow to full size in just seven days!

While quartz crystals take tens of thousands of years to grow in nature, you can grow crystals of sugar in only a few days! In the process, students learn about saturated and supersaturated solutions, seed crystals, and the rate of crystalline growth. Includes a glass jar with lid, five seeded wooden sticks, enough sucrose to grow one rock candy stick, and a study guide with complete instructions. Additional rock candy can be made using ordinary granular sugar (see included study guide for details). You will need to provide a saucepan, spoon, measuring cup, and a stove or hotplate, and adult supervision.

NGSS

This product will support your students' understanding of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)*, as shown in the table below.

Elementary Middle School High School

2-PS1-1

Students can use the Rock Candy Crystal Kit to plan and conduct an investigation to describe and classify different kinds of materials by their observable properties.

5-PS1-3

Students can use the Rock Candy Crystal Kit to make observations and measurements to identify materials based on their properties.

DCI-2/PS1.A: Structure and Properties of Matter.

A great variety of objects can be built from a small set of pieces.

MS-PS1-1

Using the Rock Candy Crystal Kit, students can develop models to describe the atomic composition of simple molecules and their structures or properties.

MS-PS1-3

Students can use the Rock Candy Crystal Kit in an investigation to describe that synthetic materials come from natural resources and can have an impact on society.

HS-PS1-7

Students can use the Rock Candy Crystal Kit to construct and revise an explanation for the outcome of a simple chemical reaction based on the outermost electron states of atoms, trends in the Periodic Table and knowledge of the patterns of chemical properties.

DCI-HS/PS1.A: Structure and Properties of Matter.

The Periodic Table orders elements horizontally by the number of protons in the atom's nucleus and places those with similar chemical properties in columns. The repeating patterns of this table reflect patterns of outer electron states.

Students can use Rock Candy Crystal Kit in a variety of hands-on chemistry labs to link structure of molecules with properties of materials. Students can grow their own crystals and enjoy eating them after the research and investigation is over. In the process, students learn about saturated and supersaturated solutions, seed crystals, and the rate of crystalline growth.
