works fine. (Remember to fill water bottle to the brim before screwing shut.)

Easy to do, safe, works almost every time. The one caveat is that once the diver is inside the water bottle, the water bottle has to be *completely* empty of air when you screw it shut. (I used an eyedropper to fill it all the way exactly to the brim, although you could probably do it by pouring water in slowly.) This is because if there's even a small amount of air in the top of the bottle, when the diver floats to the top and makes contact with the air, it will get "stuck" and increasing the pressure will no longer cause the diver to sink. (If that happens, you have to lean the bottle sideways and jiggle gently, and then once the diver gets submerged in water, even for a moment, squeezing the bottle will cause it to sink.)

Students LOVE this!

My students have a whale of a time playing with this colorful "jellyfish"! Of course, they find it a lot more challenging explaining WHY it behaves the way it does! Lots of brainstorming while playing with it, usually leads them to very insightful and correct answers!

The Jellyfish Cartesian Diver can be used by students to study the principle of density. Cartesian divers demonstrate opposing forces of buoyancy (upward) and gravity (downward). The fun comes when students squeeze the bottle to change the density of the diver. Students can take a simplistic or an advanced mathematical approach to the physics problem.
