Hero's Fountain Connection

How did humans create water fountains before water pumps were available. Hero's construction was one model that was incorporated for a long, long time. It merely works off of air pressure and a continuous flow of water to keep it going. The water goes into a closed chamber causing the air to be compressed, which, in turn, forces the water up a second tube and sprays as it exits the tube. In this closed system, the water flow is not continuous so the bottles must be inverted from time to time. This a great "toy" to demonstrate the compress-ability of gases vs. the non-compress-ability of liquids; and how pressure of a gas increases when compressed. Merely connecting two 2-L bottles with this connector that is modified to hold two tubes and having water in the system creates a fountain of water when inverted is amazing to watch. Even my students at Duke love to turn it over and watch the results. Interestingly, often my students are unable to explain what is happening and the science behind it. I do think either the tubes should be longer so they would create more of a spray or attachments to the ends to spray the water would have a greater effect along as the water could easily enter/exit the tubes. I still it is a device that creates inquisitiveness of the audience as they attempt to figure out the science behind Hero's fountain.

bottle fountain

I've had one of these fountains in my play room for several years. It is the go to toy for my grandchilden. They asked if they could have their own at home, so I ordered two more. Now, they are delightedly showing their fountains to all of their friends. Such a simple demonstration, but endlessly fascinating. One note of caution, be sure to remove the remaining ring that was initially attached to the bottle cap. If you leave it on, the fountain will leak.
