Concave/Convex Mirror NGSS

SKU #MIR-335
Availability: In Stock
Qty.
Double sided and curved with a concave side and convex side on one mirror.
each

Description

Two mirrors in one! This compact and easily stored mirror is convex on one side and concave on the other. The concave side is front-surface - perfect for a physics unit on light and reflection. Curved mirrors are all around us - in stores, telescopes and even in rear view mirrors. Ask your students to explain exactly why "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear", then, use our mirror to explore, experimentally, light ray diagrams and the science behind magnification. This mirror features reflective coatings on the outside for exceptionally true reflections as well as beveled glass edges, for safety, which are NOT sharp to the touch. The mirror is 75 mm in diameter with a focal length of 200 mm.

Hard to Use Mirror

I was disappointed with the mirror as a tool with children. It has to be held some distance from the student and is hard to see. Large polished spoons did better.

The best concave / convex mirrors I've seen
Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon May 17, 2012
These are wonderful high-quality concave/convex mirrors with sufficiently long focal length to be used effectively in the lab. I use them for laboratory optics instruction in the high-school physics classroom. Unlike other mirrors I've tried, these mirrors produce the clearest image I have seen. For example, using the concave side, students can project the bright and clear image of an ordinary candle flame onto a white foam-board screen. Upright and inverted images, magnified and reduced images, and real and virtual images can all be studied with these mirrors. This is a wonderful product. I highly recommend it.

NGSS

This product will support your students' understanding of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)*, as shown in the table below.

Elementary Middle School High School

1-PS4-3

Students can use Convex-Concave Mirrors to conduct an investigation of how different materials affect the path of light.

2-PS1-2

Students can use these in an investigation where Convex-Concave Mirrors and other different materials are tested with analyze data and determine which materials have the properties that are best suited for an intended purpose.

5-PS1-3

Students can use Convex-Concave Mirrors to make observations and measurements to identify materials based on their properties.

MS-PS4-2

Students can use Convex-Concave Mirrors to develop and use a model to describe how waves are reflected, absorbed, or transmitted through various materials.

HS-PS4-1

Students can use Convex-Concave Mirrors to conduct investigations and use mathematical representations to support a claim regarding relationships among the frequency, wavelength, and speed of waves traveling in various media.

HS-PS4-5

Students can use this Mirror to conduct investigations about technological devices use the principles of wave behavior and wave interactions with matter to transmit.

Suggested Science Idea(s)

2-PS1-2

Students can experiment with a variety of materials to determine which ones are best suited for an intended purpose such as seeing around a corner. Concave mirrors narrow the scope of vision, whereas convex mirrors broaden the scope of vision.

5-PS1-3

Students can use Convex-Concave Mirrors to test for reflectivity when shinning it with a light or laser.

1-PS4-3 and
HS-PS4-1

Students use Convex-Concave Mirrors to test the Law of Reflection by using a flashlight or laser pointed at the mirror and measuring the angles off the mirror. Placing a concave and a convex mirror side by side with an item to be reflected shows how the light or reflection can be bent due to the surface shape.

MS-PS4-2

Students can use Convex-Concave Mirrors and other objects during investigations about what materials allow the light from a laser to pass through, be absorbed or reflected.
