Good product. Good instructions. A little expensive for pieces of common metal

Great mole practicum
Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Nov 11, 2019
This is an idea long overdue - wonderful. So many students have no real idea of what a mole is and what it is for. This shows moles in reality and easy to see practicality. One thing that would be helpful would be to have the actual weights included for those of us for whom a gram scale is hard to find. I had to go to a compounding pharmacy to get the weights, and in one case, it didn't round to the nearest tenth of a gram for purposes of demonstration and calculation - because not only the atomic weight could be checked by students, but also density which makes a great back up exercise! So a little more care in cutting the samples would help.

My grandson who loves the Periodic Table was "over the moon" when he received this kit. Went directly to the kitchen to weigh each sample on the kitchen scale.

I used this for a density lab and am planning on using it for my specific heat lab. This works great for multiple lab topics. I would recommend it especially if your lab budget is tight.

Performance Assessment

This set is great to use as a performance assessment. After learning about molar mass, I gave students one of the molar samples and asked them to tell which element they were given and give me the data to back up their answers. I was pleased this assessment. Students had to demonstrate a strong understanding of the concept of molar mass. Plus it was an active assessment rather than a passive paper and pen assessment.

They got it!

As introduction to molar mass I placed each sample on the balance on wrote the mass on the board. I then asked my students, "What do you notice about what I wrote on the board for each sample and the periodic table?" They quickly responded, "It's that number on the bottom of each box!" YES! 1 mole of any element weighs the mass that's written on the periodic table in grams!

From Theory to Reality

I love these elemental moles as they take the concept off the page and give the student something to touch and hold. I like the similarity of shape that would have been hard to achieve at the local building supply company.

Perfect for Chemistry Class!

These mole samples were perfect to pass around in my Chem class after I introduced the mole. It helped the students see that a mole is a number - not density, volume etc. I love there are lesson plans ideas included. There are so many ways you can use these in the classroom. My class used the periodic table to determine the mass in grams of each metal and then checked it with the digital scale. Great visual and hands on demo for explaining 6.02 x10 to the 23rd!
