Poor Quality

I am extremely disappointed in this product. I have used magnetic wands all of the years, over 20, that I have been teaching and this is the first time I have had such a shoddy product. Within 30 minutes of introducing the wands to the class, with normal use, 2 had broken open, exposing the magnet inside and leaving me to search the classroom for the magnet. By the next day, all had come apart. I had to hot glue (the ones I could find) the magnets into place and create a more secure seal I will be looking elsewhere for further purchases

Owner Response: I apologize for your experience. You should not have received broken wands, and they should have been more durable for your student usage. This is not a typical complaint. Someone from customer service will be in touch to make this right for you.

Used for magnet activities for grade 2 such as repel attract, moving objects through paper and other solids, strong magnets. They were very durable and the kids loved them

Magnetic wands are great

I have been using these wands with my elementary school children and my three year old grandson, who is obsessed by magnets. We play I spy metal and the children hunt for and attach their magnets. They can also be used for magnetic fishing games or to sort out metallic things in a sensory box.

Magnetic Wands
Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Jun 13, 2012
Wands are of high quality and will fit my needs, but I was disappointed that all 30 were the same drab dark green rather than an assortment of colors as pictured in the catalog.

I use these with small children and I love the fact that they are sealed and easy to hold. And everyone can have their own. :)

Great for a science party
Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon May 16, 2012
For my son's 8th birthday we had a science-themed party. We did several experiments, and had the kids make hypotheses before and observations after each one. We did one experiment with iron filings on a piece of paper and a magnet below. All the kids loved it! These magnets were perfect. I also sent one home with each kid.

Great hiding fun...

Not only are these great for science experiments, they work wonders for a scavenger hunt around the room or area of the school for the kids to find. They are very strong magnets and even hold to the bottom of the playground equipment outside (a bonus that they are bright colored to locate when dropped in the gravel or grass).

Cheap

The magnets inside the wands were strong, which was great until they were so strong they pulled the plastic cover off the wand and even super glue couldn't hold it back together.

NGSS

This product will support your students' understanding of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)*, as shown in the table below.

Elementary Middle School High School

K-PS2-1

Students can use the Magnetic Wand to plan and conduct an investigation to compare the effects of different strengths or different directions of pushes and pulls on the motion of an object.

2-PS1-2

Students can use the Magnetic Wand to investigate and analyze data obtained from testing different materials to determine which materials have properties that are best suited for an intended purpose.

3-PS2-4

Students can use the Magnetic Wand define a simple design problem that can be solved by applying scientific ideas about magnets.

MS-PS2-3

Students can use the Magnetic Wand to ask questions about data to determine the factors that affect the strength of magnetic forces.

MS-PS2-5

Students can use the Magnetic Wand to conduct an investigation and evaluate the experimental design to provide evidence that fields exist between objects exerting forces on each other even though the objects are not in contact.

DCI-MS/PS1.A: Structure and Properties of Matter.

Each pure substance has characteristic physical and chemical properties that can be used to identify it.

DCI-MS/PS3.C: Relationship Between Energy and Forces.

When two objects interact, each one exerts a force on the other that can cause energy to be transferred to or from the object.

HS-PS3-3

Students can use the Magnetic Wand in the design of a device that works with given constraints to convert one form of energy into another form of energy.

HS-PS3-5

The Magnetic Wand can be used to develop and model how two objects interacting through magnetic fields, illustrates the forces between objects and the changes in energy of the objects due to the interaction.

Suggested Science Idea(s)

K-PS2-1

Students can use the Magnetic Wand and other types of magnets to plan and conduct an investigation on the strength of the pushes and pull and exert on objects.

DCI/PS1.A
2-PS1-2

Matter can be described and classified by its observable properties. Students can use the wand to test for materials that are attracted to a magnet.

MS-PS2-5

The Magnetic Wand is a wonderful tool to show the interaction of magnets without contact of those magnets.

HS-PS3-3

Students can use the Magnetic Wand in the design of a device such as a Rube Goldberg machine.

DCI/HS-PS2.B

Investigations using the Magnetic Wand will demonstrate the attraction and repulsion between electric charges at the atomic scale explain the structure, properties, and transformations of matter, as well as the contact forces between material objects.

S&E

Students can use the Magnetic Wand to develop a model to describe a phenomenon.
