This material absorbs light and slowly emits it over a few minutes.

Description

This glow-in-the-dark material absorbs light and slowly emits it over a few minutes. By placing your hand over the sheet in the light, you can see your hand print (actually your hand's shadow) "printed" on the sheet when it is placed in the dark. In a darkened room, a flash from a camera will excite this material. The material has a stick-on backing and can be cut easily with scissors. Sold by the square foot (approx 90 cm2).

How do you want it cut?
Our Phosphorescent Vinyl is sold by the square foot. However, you can have your Phosphorescent Vinyl either as individual 12" x 12" pre-cut pieces, or as large cut sheets. If you request large cut sheets we will send you the number of square feet requested in the largest contiguous sheet we can (2 ft wide x the number of feet). For example, if you requested eight square feet as large cut sheets you would receive a single sheet two ft wide x four ft long.

For pre-cut 12" x 12" squares use item SM-7.
For large cut sheets use item SM-724.

Terrific for Teaching Light

I use this paper for looking at the strengths of various colors of light. It is fun and is a very high quality glow! When the kids are experimenting they can also record in slow motion and make videos that show it lighting up as the small light beam moves. Makes them ask questions an look for the answers. Great tool!

Phosphorescence
Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Feb 1, 2019
At a recent outreach event, after demonstrating the meaning of phosphorescence, the audience was challenged to determine which colors of light will cause the phosphorescent sheets to glow and which colors will not. Square phosphorescent sheets attached to sturdy poster board were laid out in a darkened room with the various colored microlights (available from E. I., LED-red, LED-yel, etc.), taken out of the boxes they came in, and placed randomly in a pile on the tables. By shining the different colored lights, the audience was able to determine which colors did and did not cause the sheets to glow. Of course, the audience also played with the lights and sheets seeing what else they could do, Science! The kids had a great time and the principal told me that many of the kids felt this was the best activity of the night. At the university level, I use the vinyl sheet that is impregnated with zinc sulfide to demonstrate an analogy to the photoelectric effect. First a white light is shined on the paper and it glows when the light is taken away. I then use lases (red, green, and violet) pointing each, separately, on the paper. Red, no matter how long it interacts with the paper, does not cause the paper to glow; nor does green. However, when I use the violet light it instantaneously causes the paper to glow, even when I point it from the back of the room. This clearly demonstrates that there is a minimum amount of energy (higher frequency, shorter wavelength) necessary to cause the effect, analogous to the photoelectric effect.

Nice uniform phosphorescent sheets

I've tried paint before, but these sheets are much more uniform and bright. Wonderful fun with either shadows or writing (blue or UV LED flashlight). Buy blue LEDs and CR2032 coin cells (easily obtained by 100's on EBay) and have children make lights - just insert cell between LED leads.

This helps kids to understand that light is energy. You should use a camera flash to make this product really glow. It's reusable and fun. Kids like it!
