Students will long remember the dual lessons of buoyancy and fluid density of this historical thermometer replica. In addition, it is an elegant example of the glassblower's mastery! As the Galileo thermometer warms, the transparent fluid becomes less dense. The related buoyancy forces decrease* and so the enclosed glass bulbs tend to sink. Notice that the higher density bulb ( labeled '60 degF') is the first to sink. As the thermometer cools, the transparent fluid becomes more dense. The related buoyancy forces increase and so the enclosed glass bulbs tend to float. Notice that the higher density bulb ( labeled '60 degF') is the last to float. *As the temperature rises, the thermometer fluid expands and becomes less dense. On the other hand, the density of each glass bulb is fixed at its own temperature rating as determined by the manufacturer. Notice that bulbs of a higher temperature rating and lower density are the first to float and the last to sink.

Another safety warning

These are really neat. I have owned a couple. There should, however, be a flammability warning on this. Note that the info states it is filled with paraffin. My daughter's in-laws used to keep one on their wood stove (never used) as a decoration. Then one chilly holiday they decided to fire up the stove. The resulting fireball created a lot of damage, fortunately no injuries. So, keep away from sources of heat and sparks.
