Great vapor pressure demonstration!

Description

Great vapor pressure demonstration! When the handboiler is held in your warm hand, liquid quickly travels from the bottom bulb to the top along with numerous bubbles, giving the appearance of boiling. These new and improved hand-boilers are from a thicker glass and less likely to break. Due to chance of breakage, they are not toys and are not recommended for young students. Sold individually and in cases of 12. About 16.5 cm (6.5") tall. Colors and styles may vary.

Hand Boiler
Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon May 22, 2019
This is a great apparatus to have out for students to "play" with before and/or after class. Just be sure to have it in a protective container (we use a beaker with the bottom and walls lined with bubble wrap. The detailed instructions and explanation by Robert Becker are a great help in understanding why the hand boiler works as it does and he offers several suggestions the students can do as further experimentation. I have not yet figured out how to offer this at outreach events but I would like to find a way to do so. Having a sufficient number of presenters would be the key so that this apparatus along with others can be presented as a hands-on activity.

Very good display of boiling temperature of a liquid. It is made with breakable glass, not for children under 9

hand boiler
Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Dec 29, 2012
This is not so much a product review, as a suggestion. I ordered six of these, and would have loved to have received a variety of colors and/or structural designs. I know that you do have a few different glass structures, and I know that various colors are available. With an order of so many, I was disappointed that all were identical. Perhaps for future orders of this type, you might take the time to send out a variety--or at least a couple of different choices. thank you. **************Educational Innovations Responds******** Thank you for your review, Nancy. I understand your concern. When we take delivery of this product, we are given only one style and only one color of liquid. We try, whenever possible, to provide a mix of colors/styles on products that we have when available. With the Hand Boilers, unfortunately, we don't have the ability.

Heat it, cool it, work it both ways
Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon May 30, 2012
It's amazing to see how by just holding -not even squeezing- something you can make it do work. You can stress that when you use heat energy, you need a temperature difference by using a cold water wettened napkin on the small top bulb without touching the bottom. Hint that heat causes pressure to rise and gas to expand by holding the filled top bulb until it empties and bubbles leave at the bottom end. Wrap a hand about each end simultaneously, and control the flow.

Handboilers are Awesome!

My 8-year-old son had a "Mad Scientist" birthday party, so I ordered a hand boiler for him. It is amazingly fun. He showed the kids who oooed and ahhhed, let them have a turn, and returned to it throughout the day. It is so fascinating that my husband took it to work the next day to show his co-workers! I am going to buy a few more!

The hand boilers are a great tool as a hook when teaching equilibium. Also, they are great at demonstrating phaze equilibrium. When used correctly, they are quite sturdy.

The Hand Boiler is, definitely, the classroom favorite We've had a lot of laughs when I've called a couple of students up to demonstrate their "heat quotient"--its funny because, for some, the liquid barely moves, and for others, it boils in just a few seconds!!

Hand boiler?
Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon May 16, 2012
I just finished using the hand boiler with an elementary teacher workshop. The participants loved it and learned about the expansion of gases, too. The only issue is the title. Make sure your students know that the phenomenon involves the expansion of gases rather than the boiling of the liquid.

Hand bolier great
Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon May 16, 2012
I have always used handboilers to demo pressure, density and vaporization, even when doing water cycle. They ae great to open with as a question of why? In stead of going to the mall into a novelty store, I can get one along with other ordered products. (becuase, no matter how you caution students, they do break occasionally)

NGSS

This product will support your students' understanding of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)*, as shown in the table below.

Elementary Middle School High School

4-PS3-2

Students can use the Handboiler to make observations to provide evidence that energy can be transferred from place to place light and heat sources.

3-5-ETS1-3

Students can use the Handboiler to plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved.

MS-PS1-4

Students can use the Handboiler to develop a model that predicts and describes changes in particle motion, temperature, and state of a pure substance when thermal energy is added or removed.

HS-ESS2-4

Students can use the Handboiler to use as a simple model to describe how the variation in the flow of energy onto and out of Earth system result in changes in climate.

HS-ETS1.B

Developing Possible Solutions. Both Physical models (Handboilers) and computers can be used in various ways to aid in the engineering process.

Suggested Science Idea(s)

MS-PS1-4

Students can use the Handboiler as a still. The distillation process is achieved by inverting the Handboiler- top into ice and water and heat from a hand on the larger chamber.
